Soccer Season has Started!
My favorite time of the year is here. The soccer team Allec Self Storage sponsors, which I also coach, participated in their first tournament last weekend. I have a great group of 11 & 12 year old girls that I handpicked for this Spring Select Team. Jurupa FC didn’t have to travel far, as the tournament was held in Riverside at AB Brown field. The Locomotion Tournament was a ton of fun for all 12 girls on the team, and me.
Our first game was at 8:00 on Saturday morning versus a team from Pacific Palisades. I am not a morning person, never have been, and even though I thought I would magically start waking up earlier as I aged, it still hasn’t happened yet. It was not easy dragging myself out of bed in the morning, but I managed to get to the fields by 7:00am and pump up the girls as they started to arrive for the game. Our first game was magical! The girls played awesome and controlled the ball most of the game. We wound up walking away with an easy victory. This was the girls’ first real game and they won! Their smiles said it all!
Our next game was at noon. Of course, the weather had to be a little unruly. 85 degrees and very sunny in February! Neither the girls nor I were ready to be out there in that heat. Of course I was prepared and had a bag full of sunblock to share with everyone. We all lathered up and got ready to be punished by the sun. The girls fought hard against a team from Hollywood. We walked away with a draw 2-2. Not bad at all for our first day of soccer!
Sunday we played 2 very tough games. The first one was against a team from Palos Verdes. The girls tried their best, but we had a lot of unlucky shots…the ball just wasn’t going in the goal. We also had some questionable calls from the referee. It wasn’t the best officiating; Oh well, it happens. We lost the game 4-2. We were down 3-0 at one point though, so I was proud that the girls fought back and scored a couple of goals.
The second game we played on Sunday, and our final game of the tournament was against a very tough team from Chino; they had won their first 3 games and not allowed a single goal to be scored on them. I told the girls before the game, “We are going to score on them, I don’t want them advancing to the playoffs with 3 shutouts”. We played very aggressive. I loved to see the girls fighting so hard on the field. At the half, we were down 4-0. I tried my best to pump the girls up and get them ready to go back out there and fight. We were able to apply more pressure to their defense second half and we finally scored. Our sidelines erupted. You would have thought we had just won the World Series! Even though we lost the game, we walked away with our heads held high.
These girls have only been together for a month, but they already get along so well and they play like a team. I know it sounds weird to say the team plays like a team, but it is odd for a group of 11 and 12 year olds to get along so well and trust each other on the field. The girls were passing the ball very well and they had each other’s backs on the field. I see a great season ahead of us. Our league play starts in the beginning on March. I’ll make sure to post some updates.
Make sure to ask Quanah or me about the discount cards we received from the Jurupa Valley Football team; Allec Self Storage sponsor’s their team too! If you ever go to one of their games check out their scoreboard – our awesome logo is up there!
I’m signing out for now – I’ll leave you with some pictures of my team in action.
